A step-by-step guide on how I designed my favourite line of furniture
Hey friends.
So, last week, I shared some of my recent work in designing a line of furniture with Midjourney and its new style reference tool, and some of my Instagram friends asked me to teach them how I did it.
In today's newsletter, I'll walk you through each step I took to create one of my favourite works to date.
1. Style Inspiration
The main inspiration for this series came from a Pierce and Ward Instagram post, which featured a new line of ironmongery and handles presented in a beautiful format with lots of contrast between the background and the subjects. These images were used as a style reference to achieve the same level of contrast while also mimicking the simple yet beautiful background.
2. Prompt Engineering
This section requires a great deal of trial and error. I always use the go-to prompt structure that has always worked for me, which is:
For this specific example, I started by writing:
an editorial image of ironmongry in wood and brass + kelly wearstler style + unique patterns + fluted --sref <https://s.mj.run/xu7Ax7oPWVA> <https://s.mj.run/zmgLCbS2Bf0> <https://s.mj.run/1EjfBk-sNV0> --ar 3:2
And then changed it to the below prompt at the end:
an editorial image of a fluted console table with drawers + brass knob + classical profile of timber + kelly wearstler style + unique patterns + fluted--sref <https://s.mj.run/xu7Ax7oPWVA> <https://s.mj.run/zmgLCbS2Bf0> <https://s.mj.run/1EjfBk-sNV0> --ar 3:2
3. The Iterative Process
It’s all about the iterative process!
I created 983 images to get the 4-5 images I wanted for this mini-project! I usually change four variables:
Prompt
Token weights (keyword weights).
Referenced images
Style weight: (—sw)
Using the variables mentioned above, I try to generate as many options as possible to find the best combination for my needs. This process typically takes at least a few days.
