Here’s how I use Midjourney Style Referencing (—sref)
Hey friends,
So last week Midjourney released a new feature called “style referencing.”
Users can now use the parameter —sref {img url}
to reference one or more images as a reference for their work.
For those who have previously used image prompting in Midjourney, this feature might appear to be similar to image prompting (using the image URLs at the beginning of the prompt) but in the examples below, I will try to showcase how you can use style referencing and how it might be different to image prompting.
How to use Style Referencing
Copy the URL (image address) of the image(s) that you would like to choose as your reference. You can either upload your images into Discord or you can also copy the image address straight away from the source. In this case, I have used an image of an interior designed by Harry Nuriev with furniture covered with denim
.
Then in your Midjourney Discord bot, type your prompt describing the concept:
👉🏼 an editorial image of a living room designed by harry nuriev + metallic shiny walls + blue denim coated table and high-end seats + minimal decoration + metallic chandelier --ar 2:3
At the end of our prompt insert
—sref {img url}
👉🏼 an editorial image of a living room designed by harry nuriev + metallic shiny walls + blue denim coated table and high-end seats + minimal decoration + metallic chandelier --ar 2:3 —sref https://s.mj.run/87Sjf94hFiI
In the next step, you can adjust the stylisation for the image by adding the parameter
—sw {value from 0-1000}
Example —sw 0
Example —sw 250
Example —sw 50
In the next step,
you can add multiple references to your prompt in this format: --sref urlA urlB urlC
For the sake of this exercise, I have added another image from a completely different style of design which looks more like Kelly Wearstler Interiors. (Image below)
👉🏼 an editorial image of a living room designed by harry nuriev + metalic shiny walls + blue denim coated table and high-end seats + minimal decoration + metalic chandelier --ar 2:3 --sref https://s.mj.run/87Sjf94hFiI https://s.mj.run/BdQFQve9VPQ
Result:
Now that we have more than one reference, we can use
::{weight}
to specify the weight of each reference into our work.
Below I have tried a few samples of different weight allocations:
Harry Nuriev (1.5) Kelly Wearstler (1)
👉🏼 an editorial image of a living room designed by harry nuriev + metalic shiny walls + blue denim coated table and high-end seats + minimal decoration + metalic chandelier --ar 2:3 --sref https://s.mj.run/87Sjf94hFiI ::1.5 <https://s.mj.run/BdQFQve9VPQ

I hope you have gained some understanding of style referencing in Midjourney after reading today’s article.
