How can chat GPT help designers?
The brain that can help you brainstorm!

This week, I sat down with a dear friend of mine, Nikki, who is a gifted designer at Ted Baker, to see some of the work that she was producing with the help of artificial intelligence tools, as well as to learn the process that a fashion designer would normally go through when designing a collection.
We were so impressed by the result of what we had achieved in such a short amount of time and surprised to see how Chat GPT could be so useful in the design process after a few hours of work that we did together using tools such as Midjourney and Chat GPT.
Nikki and I are collaborating to deliver a live, specialised workshop on the use cases of artificial intelligence tools in the fashion design process, but I thought it would be a good idea to share what we discovered while attempting to use a text-based AI tool to assist with our design process.
Chat GPT vs Midjourney
So first of all for the context, it’s important to say that Chat GPT is a text-based AI tool which does not have the capability to draw something like how Midjourney does. That’s why we don’t hear many designers use Chat GPT in their design workflow mainly because their assumption is that Chat GPT as a text base tool can not help a highly graphical and design-oriented process.
What we have discovered, however, tells a different story. Of course, Chat GPT can not draw, paint or design because it was created to help with other purposes. If you think of Midjourney as a creative arm, Chat GPT is equivalent to a capable brain. If you had someone next to you with the same ability as Chat GPT, you would perhaps ask them to help you with brainstorming, idea generation, designing your creative brief and so on. and that’s what we precisely asked Chat GPT to help us. I will share one example of how did this.
Designing creative briefs for projects
So we began using Chat GPT in the first step of creating a brief for a virtual fashion collection. As a test, we asked it to "write a design brief for a minimalistic fashion collection," and the project brief written by Chat GPT is shown below.
As you can see, the brief not only consists of objectives and concepts, it has even expanded into writing about the key design elements to consider in the project as well as a timeline which is industry standard for a project like the one described.
As designers, we all know how important it is to have a good brief for any project and that how much a good brief could help the design.
Example of work
We discovered AI tools to be extremely useful in the fashion design process, and Nikki went on to create a collection depicting the design elements of a store interior I designed with neutral colours, which you can see in both images below, which look promising.

Nikki and I will cover the A-Z process of designing a fashion collection in a more creative and efficient way using AI tools in our upcoming workshop, as well as different ways in which fashion designer would maintain their design signature and style as they wear different hats for different projects.
