Midjourney's groundbreaking feature in Architecture & Interiors
How to use Character Reference in Architectural projects
Hey friends,
Midjourney released an incredibly powerful feature called "character reference" last week.
The main purpose of this feature is to enable the creation of consistent characters in Midjourney. People can now use an image of a person to create a wide range of materials in various contexts, styles, and emotions.
This is ideal for those interested in creating storybooks, comics, and other works.
However, there is a hidden way to use this feature in architecture and interior design, which I will demonstrate with a few examples in this newsletter.
Character Reference in Architecture & Interior
The main point of using this tool is too keep an object mostly the same in different shots.
Reference image:
In the example above, we have a beautiful curved sofa in green velvet. We want to create different shots where this sofa is placed in different positions.
For this, we will write a descriptive prompt, describing the sofa as much as possible and the new angle of the camera and then we will add the parameter —cref [url]
along with —cw [value 1-100].
Example:
A sofa with an organic, wavelike shape in olive green velvet fabric, reminiscent of the iconic sofa designed in the style of Eero Saarinen. A realistic photo of a double chaise lounge in the style of Vittorio Gregotti. --ar 61:82 --cref https://s.mj.run/540b-AeX4-Y --cw 100

The seat is shaped like two semicircular tables connected to form an S-shaped bench that forms three seats, arranged as if they were part of a round table, with a large single foam cushion placed between them. It features soft edges and rounded corners, and is set against a gray background. --cref https://s.mj.run/0ndY-8saVyc --cw 100 --ar 4:3 --sref https://s.mj.run/0ndY-8saVyc

Prompt:
A small wooden cabin on stilts by the sea in Norway, surrounded by snow-covered pine trees, with mist rising from it and an ocean view behind it. The photo was taken using Canon EOS R5 cameras, and the cabin is placed near the water's edge. It has a minimalist design with light wood walls and gray shoji screens in the style of Japanese architecture. --cref https://s.mj.run/a6RU5JoDBHo --cw 100
